Thailand’s romantic festival – Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong is one of Thailand’s most important and most beautiful festivals. As the exact date of the holiday is determined by the Thai lunar calendar, the date is different each year but normally falls in November. “Loy” means to “float”, and a “krathong” is a special Thai creation unique to the holiday. The traditional krathong is made from a cross-section of a banana tree trunk, which is then elaborately decorated with folded banana leaves and flowers in intricate towering designs. This is topped off with a candle and sometimes a coin for good luck. Each Kratong carries prayers and wishes of its holder to be sent off to float down rivers and streams. In Bangkok it’s a stunning sight to see along the banks of the Chao Phraya river and tourists are encourage to take part.
