The Royal Varuna Yacht Club based in Pattaya Thailand, is proudly hosting the OK Dinghy World Championships for the second time in February 2027.

Vibrant Pattaya, with its warm waters and consistent conditions continues to be Thailand’s top racing and training hub, regularly enticing international sailors.

The OK Dinghy has a long history in Thailand. The King Bhumibol raced the class for many years and even built one himself!

The OK Dinghy was designed by Knud Olsen, a Danish naval architect and sailor, in 1956. The name “OK” was chosen from his name, in reverse.

There is now an OK Dinghy resurgence in Thailand, adding to the more than 15,000 built worldwide.

Laszlo Nyerges interviews Danish expat Morten Jakobsen , one of the local Royal Varuna Yacht Club members organising the upcoming championships.

📺 About This Video
Varuna began in 1957 as the Varuna Marine Club. Among the founders were Prince Bhisatej Rajani (in charge of sailing) and Swiss resident Walter Meyer (the first flag commodore).

On 26 April 1965, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej bestowed royal patronage on the club, which changed its name to the Royal Varuna Yacht Club (RVYC). The king was himself an avid sailor and regularly participated in sailing events with members during this era.

Initially located near Pattaya’s original beach area, the club moved to its current seaside site on Pratumnak Hill (South Pattaya) in October 1967, chosen for its excellent sailing waters. On 14 September 1968, the king, queen, crown prince, and princesses officially inaugurated the Royal Varuna Yacht Club at this new location.

Through the following decades, RVYC became central to Thailand’s competitive sailing scene, hosting national and international regattas and events. It has supported the growth of youth sailing, junior training programs, and worked with the Royal Thai Navy and Junior Sailing Squadron of Thailand on training and competitions.

The Club’s facilities expanded over time, and a modern clubhouse complex with enhanced services was opened in the early 2000s, with the then Crown Prince (now King) participating in the grand opening.
