IMPACT Challenger, near Don Muang Airport in the north of Bangkok, is widely considered as one of the best and most important large-scale motor exhibitions in Asia.
Recently we visited Thailand’s International Motor Expo to check-out DUCATI’s launch of their new dirt-bike and enduro models to Asia ….. particularly the Desmo 450 MX.
A notable expansion beyond their sport and street bikes.
It was the centrepiece and drew heavy crowds. This was DUCATI’S boldest technical statement in decades. They hadn’t built a pure dirt-racing motorcycle since the 1971 Ducati 450 R/T, which was produced in very small numbers and disappeared quickly.
When DUCATI began teasing its DESMO 450 MX project in in 2023 , the announcement sparked disbelief in the motorcycle community.
Well …… here it is ….. launching to the Asia market.
📺 About This Video
With a 450cc single-cyclinder 4 stroke engine, it uses Ducati’s signature design with no valve springs to allow the engine to rev faster and reduces engine braking, apparently giving it a very ‘lively throttle” for dirt riding ….. suitable for the experienced. It’s high revving nature, allows a 11,900 RPM limit, the highest revving engine in its class, allowing riders to shift less, keeping momentum in its tight corners.
The launch price level was around $15,500 Australian dollars.
Will Ducati’s design language, electronics and cost base naturally fit the lightweight, aggressive, hard hitting MX World? It will be interesting how it compares to the similar KTM, Honda or Yamaha’s in this sector.
Something to contemplate ….. as we choose the most stress-free mode of escaping Bangkok’s late afternoon traffic. Jumping on to the PINK line at the exhibition’s dedicated train station! Muang Thong Thani! An expo that was well worth visiting!
