When you get an invitation to travel to the gorgeous island of Samui, there’s really only one answer. Let’s go. I was here to explore a brand new resort, but first a quick look around a destination that’s rapidly evolving. If you want to party, then Chaweng beach is the place to head to……
My next stop was the lovely beachfront of Chaweng Noi and the real reason I was here on the island. Starwood Hotels and Resorts were introducing the newest addition to the Luxury Collection brand, the just opened Vana Belle Resort. It’s name means beautiful forest and its been thoughtfully designed over a hillside where the native trees and rock formations have been retained. Combine that with stunning views, gorgeous architecture and lavish service and you’ve got the makings of an enchanting getaway. General Manager Mark O’Sullivan is lucky enough to work here…..
The luxurious pool suites and villas range from 86 to 211 square meters and are so lovely you won’t want to go anywhere else for days. The resort features two restaurants and has a unique approach to dining. When any new resort opens in Thailand its customary to bless the property and ensure an auspicious start. The Siri-wattana-bakdi family who own this resort and oversee the Thai Bev/Beer Chang empire, arranged for the placement of a spirit house at the resort entrance.
Installing a spirit house needs a special Brahmin ceremony in order to beg the spirit or ‘chao tee’ to come and live in it. In the past this ceremony could only be performed by a Brahmin, a hereditary member of a learned caste which originated in India. Today, those who have learned the correct procedure from a Brahmin, including the necessary Pali incantations can officiate at the ceremony. Donned in white, he called for family members and resort workers to join in and make an offering.
The owner’s family members told me why this sort of ceremony is so important for a new venture. Vana Belle has now been truly blessed, a fact you’ll discover as soon as you head through the landscaped surrounds and into the grounds of a true island paradise.
