Ko Samet is one of Thailand’s most popular weekend escapes thanks to its proximity to Bangkok.

No airports, just a short journey and an island heaven awaits.

Getting to Ko Samet is easy. It’s about a 3 hour drive south of Bangkok or one hour south of Patttaya to the province of Rayong, where you can jump on board a speed boat, a high speed catamaran, or a slower boat, and then when you arrive at the island, there’s a 200 baht fee for the National Park and then you just on to a local taxi and you’re on your way.

Like many little islands in Thailand , Ko Samet began its life as a budget holiday or backpacker retreat. Of course you can still have a low cost holiday here, but also you can have the alternative. This island is now home to some gorgeous 5 star resorts and spas , and some idyllic stays for a romantic getaway.

Of course it’s also an island that’s great for partying, you’ve got night clubs, beach bars, fantastic little restaurants on the sand, little restaurants in the nearby villages, there’s a lot to see here , there’s never a dull moment on Ko Samet.

In Thailand, Thai people call Ko Samet the island of LOVE. That’s why its so popular with young couples, in fact I think its one of the most romantic places to stay in Thailand. Bangkok based expats like me, love Samet because its not only close to the city but it has limited island traffic, beautiful beaches and is super relaxed.

One of the great things about Ko Samet is the food. Thai food or seafood on the beach is a must, and of course there are many other dining options on the island, international fare and of course vegan, or vegetarian if you choose.

Besides convenience, Koh Samed has a bit of something for everyone. Yes you can opt for a high-end resort stay but of major appeal is the bungalow style and 3 star options from as little as US$30 a night. Not bad when you are steps from a beach like this.

It’s no hard to leave when you know a return to beach bliss is on your doorstep.

So if you’re looking for love or a little piece of paradise here in Thailand , then the island of Ko Samet is waiting.

Make sure to add it to your bucket list here, in the Land of Smiles.
